How To Choose A Pair Of Skateboard Wheels
When choosing the perfect skateboard, you need to know how to choose a pair of skateboard wheels. The wheels are one of the most important components of a skateboard. Here's how you can ensure that you have the skateboard wheels that are most suitable for your needs.
In order to choose a pair of skateboard wheels you will need the following:
- Skateboard
- Ruler
- Determine what type of riding you plan on doing. This is important because skateboard wheels are typically measured by two factors, which are length and hardness (durometer). If you are a street or technical rider, you typically do a lot of flips and tricks. If you are into vert or transition skating, you focus on skating on ramps. If you plan on riding in several environments, you are an all terrain skateboarder, and if you don't plan on doing many tricks you want wheels suitable for cruising.
- Determine the size of the skateboard wheels. If you have a skateboard that you are already comfortable with and you are buying a new one, you can simply measure the wheels of the skateboard you already own. If you don't it is essential to note that most skateboard wheels are between 52 and 60 millimeters. Longer wheels make riding very fast and are typically used for longboarding. If you are a larger rider, choose a skateboard wheel that is between 56-60 millimeters.
- Determine the hardness of your wheels. The hardness of you skateboard wheels is also known as its durometer. The higher the durometer is, the harder the wheel is, offering less traction. Any wheel is a durometer over 90a is considered hard. Wheels with a durometer less than 90a offer a smoother ride.
