How To Choose The Right Size Baseball Bat
You must know how to choose the right size baseball bat if you are considering this purchase. A baseball bat can be rather expensive, with more high tech baseball bats exceeding $300 in price. Purchasing the right size baseball bat is important whether this purchase is for you or someone close to you.
- Use a chart to help determine the bat length. There are many tables available that are used to help adults and children choose the correct bat length. Find a table online or at a store that will use the weight and height of the batter to approximate the correct length.
- Do the math to find the correct bat weight. From the University of Arizona study on choosing the right size bat, there are three formulas to help determine the correct bat weight. Use the following: 8-10 year olds ([Height in inches/4] + 4), 11-12 year olds ([Weight in pounds/18] + 14), and high school and college players ([Height in inches/3] + 5).
- Follow level of play and regulations. Every level of baseball will have regulations regarding what size and materials are allowed. You need to utilize the length to weight ratio as well, which is a negative number that compares the bat weight to its length in inches. A 32 inch bat weighing 28 ounces is a - 4, for instance. A - 12 to - 3 is allowed in the span of leagues, from the typical little league bats to those in high school and college, respectively.
