How To Choose The Right Sized Baseball Cleats
As a kid, any old pair of sneakers worked well for playing baseball but now, it's important to know how to choose the right sized baseball cleats. As we grow up and become more serious about the game, it becomes more important to ensure that we are well equipped for performance and safety. One of the smallest pieces of equipment is probably one of the most important. The baseball cleat is by far one of the most important pieces of equipment for both performance and safety. Here are some tips to help make a wise decision when purchasing cleats.
- Identify the league requirements for cleats. If you are playing baseball in school or in a sponsored league, it is important to find out the rules. In some leagues where the players are younger, such as little leagues, they are required to wear cleats with molded studs instead of metal. The coaching staff of the team can help you find out the requirements.
- Stud size is very important as well. (Easy there, I’m talking about the studs of the cleats.) Different stud sizes work better on different surfaces. For instance, when playing on a softer surface, a longer stud will help you get a better grip. The opposite is also true for harder packed surfaces; a shorter stud will be more beneficial. On a side note, if you are new to playing baseball or wearing cleats, then you may want to try cleats with shorter, thicker studs. These studs will help you adjust and get used to wearing cleats.
- Look for baseball cleats that are made from natural materials. Leather is an excellent choice, because this natural material allows your foot to breath and reduces sweat and discomfort. Many baseball cleats are made from synthetic materials that are cheaper. This is only a good option when purchased for younger children because they grow out of shoes and cleats very quickly.
- When shopping for cleats, make sure you wear, or at least bring along, the socks you will use for playing. It is important to try on the cleats with these socks to help identify how these cleats with feel during play. (Make sure you wash them before bringing them along.)
- The fit and comfort of your new cleats is very important. Make sure the fit is secure enough that there is not a lot of room for your foot to slip around in. A general rule of thumb is to look for baseball cleats one half the size of your usual tennis shoe size. If possible, look for cleats that have a hook and loop buckle or a Velcro strap that goes across the foot. This design helps to ensure a snug, comfortable fit and in some cases, will help keep the cleat on your foot if the laces come undone.
Following these guidelines should help you to choose the most comfortable, safe and effective cleats for your baseball games.
