How To Choose Ski Goggles

Ski goggles protect your eyes from a multitude of elements such as bright sun conditions (caused by the sun's reflection on snow) and ice particles or twigs that can get in your face while you're skiing. A pair of ski goggles can range from $25 to over $100. Factors that you will need to consider when choosing ski goggles include lens tints, anti-fog features and fit.

  1. Select a lens tint based on the conditions you will be skiing in. Yellow-based lens tints are good for low-light conditions while dark brown and gray tints are good for bright conditions.

  2. Look for a pair that has features such as double vents or an anti-fog coating so your ski goggles aren't constantly fogging up while you're out on the slopes.

  3. Try on some pairs of goggles. Make sure that the lenses fit comfortably and doesn't pinch your face. The foam padding on the goggles should make a good seal against your face.

  4. Check the straps to see how adjustable the ski goggles are.

  5. Check to see how the goggles affect your peripheral vision. Larger, spherical lenses tend to give better peripheral vision. Ideally you want a pair of ski goggles that allow you a 180 degree view.

  6. If you wear glasses, check to see if the goggles fit over your glasses.

Tip: If you wear a helmet, bring your helmet to the store when you try on the goggles so that you can see how well they fit over your helmet. This is the only sure way to properly size ski goggles.
