By keeping some basic guidelines in mind, you can learn how to clean football back pads. Clean football back pads are not only important for athlete safety, but can also ensure optimal performance. After cleaning, be sure to allow the football back pads to dry completely before further use.

  1. Remove any athletic or duct tape from the exterior of the football back pads. Use a clean brush with short, sturdy bristles to brush off any dirt, sand, or other debris that may be on the outside of the pads.
  2. Purchase a large tub that can hold at least five gallons of water. These can typically be found at any home improvement of sporting goods store. Place a small amount of dish or laundry soap into the bottom of the tub, and fill approximately three quarters of the way with clean, warm water.
  3. Submerge the football back pads into the tub, and allow to soak for at least one hour. Use the brush described earlier to scrub out any dirt or sweat stains. Carefully remove the football back pads from the tub, and remove any excess water from the pads by squeezing thoroughly.
  4. Place the football back pads on a flat surface that is exposed to direct sunlight. Allow the back pads to sit undisturbed for at least eight hours. After this time has passed, test the back pads for dampness. If water is still evident to the touch, flip the back pads over and let sit for another four to six hours. Do not use the pads until completely dry.
