Learn how to clean a grand piano–with the proper care, you can maintain the looks of your piano as well as its value. Grand pianos usually come in lacquer or polyester and satin, semi, or high-gloss finish. Grand pianos require special care, especially when choosing the right dusting, cleaning, and polishing methods. Follow these tips to protect the wood and prevent damage to the finish.
To clean a grand piano, you'll need:
- Feather duster
- 2 soft, flannel cloths
- Oil soap
- Use a feather duster to dust the piano. This prevents dust from being spread around and scratching the surface, which may occur if you dust with a dry cloth. Go in straight strokes from top to bottom.
- Take a cloth and dampen it with warm water. Wring it out well. Wipe over the piano from top to bottom in long strokes. Don't forget to wipe the keys from back to front. Go in the direction of the grain. If there is no visible grain, just make sure not to wash in circles. If the piano requires deeper cleaning than plain water, you can add a few teaspoons of oil soap to a basin of water and use it to remove stubborn dirt. Don't overwet the piano while cleaning.
- Use another cloth to dry the piano well. This keeps it shiny and prevents water spots or damage. You may now polish the piano, but most manufacturers advise that you don't use polish. It can cause the finish to soften or appear filmy, and may even penetrate the internal parts of your piano.
Never use aerosol polishes and harsh cleaners on a grand piano. You shouldn't attempt to clean the inside of your piano. Ask your technician for assistance with choosing the right polish for your piano's finish, if polish is necessary.
