How To Clean Out Internet Explorer Browser Cache

Knowing how to clean out Internet Explorer browser cache frees up space on your computer and prevents outdated versions of web sites from loading. Your temporary internet files folder, more commonly referred to as the cache, contains a history that traces sites you have visited and files on those pages that have loaded, such as image and sound files. Storing your cache ensures faster web browsing on those pages. Still, these files take up space, so it’s a good habit to clean your cache once each month.

To clean your Internet Explorer cache, you will need:

  • An internet connection
  1. Open an Internet Explorer browser window.  It will load to your default home page, but you can clean your Internet Explorer cache despite what web site you are currently visiting.
  2. Select “Tools” from the top menu, and choose “Internet Options.” This will open a new window that defaults to the General tab. This tab is broken up into three sections: Home page, Temporary Internet files and History.
  3. Choose “Delete Files” from the Temporary Internet files section to clean your cache. At this time you may also delete your cookies by clicking “Delete Cookies” from the same section. Click “OK,” and “OK” again when prompted.

If you are severely low on space, set your internet options to automatically clean your cache automatically.  Again, open the Internet Options window from the Tools menu. Select the “Advanced” tab from the top menu. Scroll down to the “Security” section of this window, marked by the padlock icon. Click the empty check box next to the line item that reads “Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed.” Click “OK” to save this new setting.
