Knowing how to clean pet urine from carpet is essential for any pet owner. Don’t wait to clean the “accident” as this can result in the urine drying and causing a stained carpet or set-in odor. A pet that can smell urine odor in the carpet will continue to urinate in the same place.

To clean pet urine, you will need:

  • Paper towels
  • Dry newspaper
  • Cool water
  • Carpet shampoo
  • Wet vacuum
  • Pet odor neutralizer
  1. Clean pet urine while it is wet to prevent set in odor. Pull wet urine out of the carpet with paper towels and newspaper. Lay several of layers of paper towels followed by several layer of newspaper over the wet spot. Stand on the paper to pull urine out of the carpet and into the paper. Repeat the process until the area is dry.

  2. Rinse the urine area on the carpet with cool water. Blot up water using the same process in Step 1 or use a wet vacuum to clean pet urine.

  3. Shampoo the carpet area with a carpet cleaning machine and cool water if a urine smell remains in the carpet fiber. Do not steam clean, as the heat can set in stain and odor. Use a pet odor reducing shampoo to clean pet urine odor from the carpet.

  4. Apply a pet odor neutralizer designed to clean pet urine once the carpet is clean. Purchase a high quality brand from a pet supply store for best results. Test the neutralizer on a hidden area of carpet first to verify it does not stain or alter the color of the carpet.

  5. Repeat the process if the pet urine stained the carpet or the odor remains.

  6. Prevent future urine soaked carpets by placing the soiled paper towels in the litter box or outdoors so the pet can smell the proper place to urinate. Have patience with house training, provide rewards for good behavior and encourage the pet to urinate in the proper location.
