Learn how to clean platinum jewelry—this rare precious metal is commonly used in making fine jewelry. It's hypoallergenic, tarnish-resistant, and stronger than gold or silver. This makes it a great choice for wedding bands, watches, bracelets, and necklaces. Clean your platinum jewelry with a soft toothbrush and pre-packaged jewelry cleaner to restore its beautiful white shine.

To clean platinum jewelry, you'll need:

  • Pre-packaged jewelry cleaner (optional)
  • Household ammonia
  • Water
  • Small bowl
  • Soft bristled toothbrush
  • Soft cloth
  1. Mix equal parts ammonia and water in a small bowl. If you have pre-packaged jewelry cleaner, follow the directions on the container. Place your jewelry into the bowl or container. Allow it to soak for a few minutes.
  2. Brush the platinum jewelry with a soft bristled toothbrush. If your jewelry cleaner comes with a brush, use it instead. Make sure to get around gemstones and intricate patterns, as they tend to collect more dirt and debris.
  3. Rinse the jewelry with lukewarm water. Use a soft cloth to dry the platinum to a shine.

Store platinum pieces separate from other jewelry types to prevent scratching. The best way is to wrap each piece in silk, paper, or velvet. If your platinum jewelry appears scratched, you can take it to a jeweler to have it polished or purchase a polish to use at home. Although platinum is a strong metal, it can still be worn and scratched. Take off fine jewelry when you're doing heavy labor, housework, or working with chemicals to prevent damage.
