How to clean rug is pretty simple as long as you take care of your rug in between cleanings. Rugs can put the finishing accent to any homes decor. So you want to maintain your rugs delicate designs and prevent color from fading from improper cleaning.

What you need to clean your rug:

  • Vacuum
  • water
  • Cleaning solution
  • Cloth/sponge
  1. You need to vacuum your rug regularly. Depending on how much traffic that comes in contact with your rug once a month should be suffice, but if your rug lies in a high traffic area, it may need to be vacuumed once a week. If there are little tassels on the ends of the rug be careful not to run over the tassels with the vacuum cleaner. They will get sucked in the vacuum, where they can possibly unraveled causing the rug to lose some of its appeal. If it’s not too hard to handle you can take it outside, hang over a surface that want pull or snag the rug and with a broom give it a good beating.

  2.  Before using any type of rug/carpet cleaning solution check the label for compatibility. In a hidden spot or even on the back of the rug do a spot test to make sure the color doesn’t fade or bleed. Never saturate the rug in water or the cleaning solution you choose to use. You don’t want to risk causing permanent water damage to the rug. Instead when you are spot cleaning your rug, use a small amount of cleaning solution, blot with a damp cloth or sponge  don’t scrub vigorously may cause fading; vinegar and water works well for many types of stains and also good for removing pet odor. You can also use a mild dishing washing liquid this can also be used to clean the tassels if they are looking a bit dingy. Blot rug with dry cloth when finish cleaning.

  3. Allow rug to thoroughly dry before walking on it. To avoid further stains hang the rug somewhere it can dry completely. Once dry vacuum once more to remove lint from the cloth. It would be helpful to scotch guard your rug to protect from stains. Once again do a pre-test on the rug.

Your rug can last a long time if proper care is taking. Whenever there is a spill on the rug don’t allow it to sit and become a permanent stain clean-up right away.
