Before rushing to the store to purchase a bread maker, it's a good idea to learn how to compare bread makers.  In addition to price and visual appeal, there are a multitude of other things, like features and loaf size, that should be compared before a bread maker purchase.  By comparing bread makers well before you shop, you can make the best choice for buying a bread maker you will love.

1. Compare features and functions.  Modern bread makers can range from basic models, which are equipped for kneading dough and baking simple white bread, to advanced models that include a selection of functions like timers, knead-only or bake-only cycles, crust options and even some that will add fruit or yeast at a specified time during the process.  If you do not plan to make exotic types of bread, you likely don't need the best bread maker on the market and can limit your options to basic bread makers.
2. Look for the loaf size.  One selling point of certain bread maker models is the size and shape of the bread produced.  Models that advertise a high-rise pan can produce larger loaves than other models.  Similarly, some bread makers will cook the loaf in a tall rectangular pan while others will use an oblong pan, which gives a more-professional looking finished product.
3. Check out the appearance.  Bread makers can range from white, black, stainless steel and a variety of other colors.  Finding one that fits in with the decor of your kitchen is an important factor to consider.  Along the same lines, look at the control panel when comparing bread makers as some are more user friendly than others.
4. Research the brand name.  Unless you are partial to a certain brand, you will want to do a bit of research on the bread maker's manufacturers before settling on a specific model.  Research quality reviews from the company as well as the pricing and availability of replacement parts and manuals should you need to purchase those down the line.
5. Shop around for the best price.  Not only do you want to compare prices between different and models to find out which provides the best value for your money, but also pricing on the same model between different stores.  Once you've determined which model is best for you, call around or check prices online to see which retailer sells that model at the best price.
