Knowing how to compare prices on prescription drugs can save the consumer hundreds, if not thousands of dollars a year. While there are various routes for obtaining prescription drug prices at various pharmacies, there are a few that are quick and easy.

  1. AARP Contrary to popular belief, AARP services aren't just for the older generation. They have a quick and easy prescription drug comparison tool that can be accessed from a link on their website. This redirects the user to sites, such as Consumer Reports, where they can learn about numerous drugs. In addition to comparing prices on these prescription drugs, the consumer can also learn about generics, safety and the effectiveness of the particular drug. Prescription comparisons can be located by the drug or the condition, simplifying the entire process.
  2. Price Finders In the wake of soaring healthcare costs, many states offer an online program that allows the consumer to comparison shop prescriptions drugs online. This is generally a government site that has a listing of major drugs and the cost at various locations in a specific region. However, comparing prices on some prescription drugs may be limited by this service and not all states may have such a program in place yet.
  3.  Alternatives Although the world wide web offers many benefits when it comes to comparing prices on prescription drugs, some may prefer to do so in person or by phone. Legally, the pharmacy of choosing cannot withhold pricing information from the consumer and must disclose how much the drug will cost. The consumer is under no obligation to purchase the prescription at the pharmacy simply because he has received a price.
