Before you can call yourself a grill master, you are going to need to learn how to cook a steak on a grill properly.  Believe it or not, it is not as easy as simply throwing a steak on a grill and watching it burn.  There is an actual art to it.  So if you want your guests and friends to admire you for you grilling expertise, it wise to learn a few tips that will teach you the best ways to cook a steak on a grill.

  1. Quality meats are essential when you cook a steak on grill.  It is a simple and unfortunate fact.  The better the meat, the better the taste.  So, do not skimp.  If you want to have great tasting steaks, you are going to have to shell out some dough.
  2. Now, you can not just throw your steak on a grill as soon as you light the fire.  The grill will need to be warmed up.  Of course, you want to be careful here, because if the grill is too hot, you will just end up with burnt leathery pieces of meat.  An ideal cooking temperature is somewhere around 375 degrees
  3. Since you have spent some money on quality meat, there really is no reason for any type of fancy marinades or rubs.  The meat should already have a naturally pleasing flavor.  However, it is okay to use a rub to help enhance the meat, and bring out the flavor.  This can be done by applying a rub consisting of a simple salt and cracked pepper mixture.
  4. Each steak should be cooked for around five minutes per side.  You can flip the steak two to three times during this grilling cycle.  This will decrease the likelihood of the outside becoming black or charred.
  5. Finally, you will want to determine whether the steaks are done.  You can do this by cutting open a steak and looking for redness.  A well done steak will be completely gray throughout.  A medium-well steak will have a little pink.  A medium steak will be more pink; and a medium rare will pink and bloody throughout.
  6. You can also use a thermometer to determine if a steak is done.  When you cook a steak on a grill, this is a full proof method of checking for doneness.  A well done steak will be around 175 degrees, a medium 160, and a rare 140.
