Learning how to count cards is one of the ways in which people can attempt to win at blackjack. This method of winning is legal but is not openly embraced at casinos. Counting cards is often seen as cheating because it gives the counter and unfair advantage. Many casinos have implemented a card device that makes it difficult for individuals to count cards. One of the most common counting methods is the high low method. Using this method makes counting cards a whole lot easier to learn and to execute in a real life situation.

To learn how to count cards, you will need:

  • Deck of cards
  • Stopwatch
  1. Study the counting value system. In order to be good at counting cards you first need to know the value that is assigned to each card. Cards that are numbered 2 through 6 have a value of plus 1 while cards numbered 7 through 9 have a value of 0. Cards that are 10 or higher have a value of minus 1. These kinds of cards will include aces as well as face cards.
  2. Practice counting. You have to be able to calculate these values up onto the point in which it becomes second nature. Try practicing in places where there are noises, because if you are in a casino chances are that there will be an unlimited amount of distractions.
  3. Understand what the score means. As you practice adding up all of the values in your head as the cards are dealt you should also be able to understand what the number means. For example if at some point while you are counting cards you have a high value in your head then this means that there are a select amount of smaller value cards remaining in the deck of cards.
  4. If you lose count start over. If you lose your count then you will have to wait until the dealer starts over with a new deck of cards to begin counting again.

Counting cards is no easy task and people practice for an extended amount of time to ensure that they get it right. Practicing over and over again will help to get you ready for the big leagues.
