Being able to know how to create primitive furniture finish antique is a great skill to have. It will allow you to decorate furniture to benefit your rustic style, and you will have the sense of satisfaction that comes from doing something yourself.
- Sand down the furniture you are working on. You want to remove any shine that the original piece had. You're just trying to rough it up a bit. Once you have gone over the whole thing, just run it over with a damp cloth and let it dry. Once dried, check it again to see if it is roughed up enough. If not, repeat this step.
- Dip your brush slightly into the paint that you are going to use. You don't want to go any further than 1/8 of an inch. Dab it off on a paper towel or a rag that you are going to dispose of. Then brusquely go over the furniture with the brush. This technique is called dry brushing. You don't want it to be perfect. Quite the contrary, you want it to look streaky. Dry completely.
- Paint over with your second coat. This layer should be a little bit more perfect than the last one, but should not completely cover. The idea is that you want the base coat and the wood to come through. Many choose to stain in between these steps, but I leave that up to you. Let this layer dry.
- Sand in areas where you want it to look worn. Don't be afraid to sand down to the wood. Use a fine grit. To make this even more authentic, sand in areas where you would expect wear and tear to happen over the life of a furniture item.
