With the high cost of restaurant meals, learning  how to cut restaurant expenses is a wise way to trim a weekly budget. To formulate a plan to cut restaurant expenses, think of the components of a typical restaurant meal: a drink, an appetizer, an entree  and a desert. To cut down the cost of the meal, figure out how to save on each of these components.

Order water to save money on the drinks. Though some fast food restaurants charge a little for water, very few sit-down restaurants do. If everyone at the table orders water, the bill will be significantly lower. To keep the bill as low as possible, avoid purchasing alcoholic drinks. They have a high markup and buying just a few can quickly double the bill.

Order just one appetizer and share it with everyone at the table to cut restaurant expenses for appetizers. Many appetizers come in large portions, and sharing them will stimulate conversation as well as lower the restaurant bill.

Go to restaurants during days when the restaurant is running specials to save on the entree. Some restaurants have one day each week when kids eat free or when there is a general special on entrees. This can chop down your bill significantly. To find out about the specials, check the restaurant's or call for the information. If there are fewer meals that you have to pay for, you can cut restaurant expenses down to a fraction of the regular cost.

Cut restaurant expenses for desserts by either skipping dessert or ordering one and sharing it. Restaurant desserts are option extremely expensive for small portions of dessert. If you just want to linger, order coffee or tea instead of a dessert.

Some restaurants offer coupons that can further help you cut restaurant expenses. To find these, check the coupon packages that come in the mail or check the Sunday paper for the local coupon packets.
