Negative thinking is common with depression and dwelling on thoughts that put you in a bad mood should will not help you deal with your depression. This can be a very effective strategy when it comes to helping you out of a rut. For example, instead of sitting around and allowing your negative thoughts permeate inside your head, read a book you know you enjoy or watch a movie that makes you happy, figure out what makes you feel good and build upon that.
- Talk with friends and loved ones Feeling alone can only echo the feelings of dread and depression, thus you should seek out support from other people. Talking with a family member or close friend on a regular basis can help you to feel better. You may feel you don’t have the energy or that you are ashamed to share your feelings with someone but remember that people who are close to you are always willing to help. Go out and attend social gatherings even if you're not in the mood to because just being around people can heighten your mood.
- Get regular exercise and take care of yourself Going outside and doing something that takes your mind away from your depression is a must. This can mean going for a walk, shooting hoops with friends or even just sitting on a park bench watching the sunset. The world is full of fun things to do, you just have to go out and experience them. Every day is a new beginning and you should try to get at least a little bit of exercise to increase feelings of health and happiness each day (like taking the stairs instead of the elevator or parking a longer distance from your destination). Also develop techniques to help you deal with depression-related stress like meditating or taking regular breaks from activities that bring you discomfort.
- Understand and raise your emotional intelligence Emotional intelligence is the recognition of your emotional response to certain situations. Try to assess what makes you angry, or sad, or even happy and try understand what emotions you feel and how they came about, then it will be easier for to deal certain situations (or make better ones even more enjoyable). For example, when something makes you sad don't delve into this feeling without taking note about your thought process that has led to this outcome. If you're on the road and someone cuts you off try to understand what it is that makes you mad about that and realize that it is but a small factor of your day that will bring no good into your life if dwelled upon.

The most important thing for you to do when dealing with depression is to not get discouraged and to remember that every day is a new opportunity to take steps to feeling better. Getting up and out and doing things you may feel like not doing will, in the long run, help you to deal with the dread accompanied by depression.
