Learning how to deal with sexual repression and being a Christian is very subjective. Often, there are potential thoughts or desires that can occur which seem to go against your Christian beliefs, which prevent you from being able to express yourself sexually, but there are ways to deal with them without feeling depressed. Sexual repression especially for religious people, can lead to feelings of shame. Following is some information on how to deal with sexual repression and being a Christian.

  1. Pinpoint your exact problem. If your religion is preventing you from thinking of anything sexual, which can actually force you to avoid members of the opposite gender, or even cause you to deny that members of the opposite sex are appealing or even there, likely you have classic sexual repression. This can also lead to social awkwardness, especially when in the presence of people who are of the opposite gender. Once you know what you need to work on, you can begin to open up and deal with your problems.
  2. Think about how your being a Christian should not get in the way of your being able to sexually express yourself, or at least interact with people better. Try to prevent yourself from denying that the opposite sex is unattractive, and keep yourself from avoiding certain social gatherings based on possible feelings that you are afraid you may have.
  3. If you can begin to socialize better, especially with members of the opposite gender, your sexual repression will begin to fade. Although your Christian religion may have you afraid of coveting other people, simply acknowledging, at least to yourself, that someone else is attractive is certainly permissible. Try to think about these matters, and without going too far into it, think about boys that are handsome or girls that are pretty. Friendly conversation on the topic with friends is also not too bad.
  4. Even though you are a Christian, try to open up some, and interact (not necessarily by actually having encounters, though if they should present themselves, you need not shy away too much, if you can start a relationship). Socially engage with people, regardless of their genders. Think of everyone as a potential friend, and if you eventually find someone that could be more than a friend, do not shy away. If you can get to this point, you are successfully dealing with sexual repression as a Christian.

Learning how to deal with sexual repression as a Christian can be tough. Some people designate religion as a reason for their not thinking about, or even having anything to do with members of the opposite sex, and this is certainly unnecessary, so see if you can get over any reserved feelings, and see where that takes you.
