How To Diet For Cancer

Knowing how to diet for cancer involves eating properly to prevent cancer from developing. Being overweight and having a poor diet is a way to develop the seventeen types of cancers that exist.  The American Cancer Institute has guidelines for eating that help reduce the rate of cancer and are helpful for those being treated for cancer. Exercise, diet and avoiding certain foods are important part of this program. Dieting for cancer is all about common sense and following  practical dieting guidelines from your doctor and other professionals.

  1. Eat five servings or more of fruit and vegetables daily. Fresh fruits and vegetable have cancer fighting properties . You will want to include more in your diet.. Eat more vegetables like cabbage, carrots, celery, and parsley. Try having a salad every day for lunch or dinner.  Eat vegetables at your meal as a side dish.  Try preparing them different ways use herbs and spices to make them taste better. Try swiss chard, spinach, broccoli rabe, and red leaf lettuce.
  2. Eat more fruit for snacks and dessert. Eat more fruit like blueberries, strawberries, apples, and oranges for dessert. Don't add sugar to fruit, try a splash of lemon or lime juice. Fresh fruit is better than dried.
  3. Eat more whole grains.  Eat brown rice instead of white, whole wheat pasta, and barley. Popcorn makes a great snack without butter.  Try whole wheat bread, rye or pumpernickel instead of white bread. They are good sources of nutrients and contain antioxidants. Don't forget nuts and seeds.
  4. Limit your intake of red meat.  Eat lean cuts of meat without fat in smaller portions.  Eat chicken, but cut off fat or buy boneless. Eat some brown rice or a salad with your meal.  Avoid fatty processed meats like sausage, cold cuts, and bacon.
  5. If being treated for cancer, talk to the doctor about diet and nutrition. Work with a qualified dietitian or nutritionist while receiving cancer treatments. Find ways to deal with side effects without losing important nutrients and minerals in your diet. Take supplements and work closely with the doctor and dietitian. Some cancer patients develop an aversion to fat so eat lean protein, grains, fruit and vegetables is a good plan.
  6. More on cancer treatment. Eat bland food without strong spices. Eat small frequent meals throughout the day. Find ways to get essential minerals and nutrients from supplements.
  7. Exercise daily. Get at least 30 minutes of exercise daily.  Walk, swim, bike ,or run whatever form of exercise you enjoy the most. Try to exercise every day or at least three times a week.
  8. Eat more fiber. Fiber is known as roughage it helps with digestion and moves food through your system. It moves bacteria out of your system before it causes you illness. The more unprocessed the food is, the more fiber it has. Try to buy local grown and organic produce for your diet.
