Learning how to diet for a diabetic condition is really about learning how to eat healthy foods. It is about eating food that helps you to control your blood sugar level effectively. It means planning meals by writing out a weekly menu and shopping for food accordingly. It means counting carbohydrates in foods because they covert to sugar in the body. There are many foods a diabetic can eat; it is not necessary to only buy special food. A diabetic diet plan is high in vitamins and minerals and low in fat and sugar. Follow these guidelines to begin dieting for a diabetic condition.

  1. Plan your meals carefully every week. This means writing out a complete meal plan for the week that includes breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. Watch the size of your portions and the amount of carbohydrates in your food. Choose healthy foods that are low in carbs.
  2. Work with a dietitian. If you need guidance, ask your doctor to recommend a dietitian to work out a diet plan with you. A dietitian can help you choose the right foods and find ways to control your appetite. A dietitian can help you pick foods that have good carbs.
  3. Eat healthy, simple carbohydrates. This means eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables every day. These offer vitamins, minerals and plenty of fiber. Avoid empty carbs in foods like doughnuts and white bread.
  4. Eat complex carbohydrates like starchy vegetables and whole grains. Eat vegetables and whole grain products that take longer to digest in the body. This keeps your blood sugar more consistent. Eat whole wheat bread, brown rice, sweet potatoes and squash. When a diabetic's blood sugar remains constant, he feels less hungry.
  5. Cut down on sweets. Eat fruit instead of a piece of cake. Make homemade fruit sorbet or have yogurt with fruit. Use less sugar in recipes and more whole grains and nuts. Eat a piece of cake on occasion then stop there.
  6. Choose healthy fats. Use canola oil and olive oil for cooking and salads. Eat a moderate amount of nuts and seeds. Tuna and salmon are good sources of healthy fat for fish. Enjoy sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, almonds, peanuts and walnuts. Eat nuts and seeds in moderation.
  7. Use healthy cooking methods. Broiling or baking meat, seafood and poultry reduces fats. Steaming and stir frying vegetables is the best way to help them retain nutrients. Eating raw salads and fruit is the best way to get vitamins and minerals. These food are good for the body.
  8. Organize the kitchen for diabetic dieting. This means get rid of foods that are not good for you. Packages of cookies, sweet sugar cereals, baked goods, dairy products and white breads are bad choices for diabetics. Buy fewer of these items and throw them out if you can.
  9. Stock up on healthy food and organize your refrigerator and cupboards for easy use. This means having fruits, vegetables and healthy snacks where you can find them easily. Stock cabinets with brown rice, whole grain cereals and healthy snacks like nuts or granola. Don't forget, low-fat dairy products like yogurt can be stored in the refrigerator. Fill your crisper with fruit, vegetables and healthy snacks.
