People with liver disease should know how to diet for liver disease in order to stay as healthy as possible. While following a diet for liver disease, people with the disease should always work in conjunction with their doctor to make sure they are on the diet that is best for them. Following these steps can help a person with liver disease stay healthy.

  1. Limit the amount of protein intake. Normally, protein is good for the body, because it helps eliminate fatty tissue build up. However, people who have damaged livers cannot process proteins correctly. This means that a person's brain can be negatively affected by waste products that build up in the body from too much protein. Having a diet for liver disease that limits protein will reduce the chance of waste building up and affecting a person's brain.
  2. Increase the amount of carbohydrate intake. Carbohydrates should constitute a large portion of a liver disease diet. Since the body stores carbohydrates in the form of glycogen, eating a diet high in carbohydrates will help the body store glycogen. A liver disease diet that is high in carbohydrates will also help the body from preserve protein in the body.
  3. Restrict your sodium intake. Too much sodium in a diet can cause the body to retain water. A liver disease diet needs to have limited sodium, because too much sodium can cause the swelling and fluid in the liver to increase. If a person with liver disease is retaining too much water, then they should limit their sodium intake to one or two grams per day.
  4. Take vitamin supplements. To ensure the body is getting all the nutrients it needs, a diet for liver disease should include vitamin supplements. It is especially important for a person with liver disease to take B complex vitamins. People with liver disease should talk with their doctors to make sure they are taking all of the vitamins that they need to stay healthy.
