It is recommended that if you plan to gain weight, take in 500 extra calories per day.
  2. Protein and high calories food. When you are deciding what to eat, you should avoid eating foods like potato chips and candy bars; they are high in calories, but these foods are unhealthy. To make the most of your diet, you should eat foods that are high in protein and calories. Bananas, tuna and peanut butter are all healthy choices.
  3. Carbohydrates and fats. Carbohydrates is another excellent source for weight gain. Anyone that has ever done body building will tell you carbohydrates are an essential part to weight gaining. The reason carbohydrates are necessary is because they are the only source that supplies your body with the energy it needs. Fats are also an excellent choice, as long as they are healthy fats and have more calories than protein. Some good sources of fats are fish oil, sunflower seeds and bread.
  4. Eating meals. When you are underweight, eating three meals a day can be difficult to do. Even if you are trying to gain weight, the most effective way to do this is by spreading out your meals. Instead of eating three meals a day, you should eat smaller meals five to six times a day.
  5. Protein drinks. When you are trying to gain weight, it is crucial to get your recommended amount of protein. This is not always easy to do. The best way to insure you get your recommended dosage is by drinking protein shakes. Ensure is not just for elderly and is an effective way to get proteins and calories.
  6. Counting calories. When trying to gain weight, it is necessary to keep track of your calorie intake. Knowing how many calories you are burning will help you better understand how many calories you need to take in. There are free programs online that will help you in keeping track of your calories.
