How do Break Studios payments work? Break Studios offers writers the opportunity to work on articles of all types and be published as online authors, but once the article is up for the world to see, how do the payments work?

Break Studios follows the payment system of many online publishing houses, paying writers through PayPal. PayPal is a free service available to anyone and is a perfect portal for online transactions; simply linking a PayPal account to an email address allows companies like Break Studios to easily wire payments directly to the writer’s account.

Once articles are accepted for publishing, they are added to the payment pool. According to Break Studios’ Writers Guidelines and FAQs, payments are made semi-monthly on the 1st and 15th of each month (the page later clarifies that payments are made twice per month, or semi-monthly, which is a difference of one pay period per year). Any articles accepted at least four days prior to that date will be paid for on that billing cycle. Should the 1st or 15th fall on a weekend or holiday, payments are deposited the following business day. Although payments are submitted to PayPal on the 1st and 15th, PayPal often has a delay in processing. Account holders should expect to see the transaction released within four business days.

Since writers are not actually employees of Break Media, no taxes are taken from any payments. The amounts are paid in-full, according to the value of the article listed in the content pool before submitting; most articles available run around $8 each. Tax issues will be taken care of via IRS form 1099 (or the contracted services form from the IRS). At the beginning of the following year, all writer’s who have submitted Break Studios articles will be sent a 1099 to file with their existing tax information (W-2s, etc.), and writer’s are responsible for paying any applicable income taxes.
