How Do I Fix My Computer Speakers?

How do I fix my computer speakers?  This can be a little tricky.  There can be a number of reasons why the computer speakers are not working.  It could either be the device driver isn't installed properly, the incorrect speaker device is selected, or the volume is muted or the speakers are not connected to the computer properly.  The first thing you will want to check is to make sure the computer speakers are connected and powered on properly.  Okay, lets get started:

1.  Device Manager.  We will need to go to the Device Manager tool to make sure the device driver for the computer speakers are installed properly.  Under the Device Manager there will be a line called sound, video and game controllers.  You will notice a plus sign next to the sound, video and game controllers.  Click on the plus sign.  It will then list all the drivers.  We are looking for the sound driver.  Once you have located the sound driver make sure it doesn't have a red or yellow mark on it.  If it doesn't, it is installed properly.  If it does, we need to reinstall the sound driver.

2.  Control Panel.  Next, you will want to go to the sound in the Control Panel.  Another way to get to the sound window is by right clicking the speaker icon in the lower right corner next to the time.  Then, select playback devices.  Once you are in the sound window you will see three tabs the one we are interested in is the playback tab.  Select this tab if you haven't done so already.

3.  Playback Tab.  The speaker playback device should have a green check mark on it.  If not, then select it and the green check mark will set it as the default playback device.  Your computer speakers should now work.
