How To Do Karate Kicks
Learning how to do karate kicks can be difficult. Just like every aspect of karate, it requires concentration, focus, and discipline. Of course, once you master a karate kick, it can become a very effective tool in both exercising and self-defense. Learning karate helps you develop quicker reflexes, a disciplined mind, and self-confidence. Still nothing comes easy, so when you're practicing karate kicks, try to remain patient.
- Get in the proper stance. Doing a proper karate kick is all about balance, and you cannot maintain your balance without the right fighting stance. To begin, you will want to stagger your legs. The foot you want to kick with will be out in front. For added balance, practice using your toes to grab a hold of the floor.
- Slide forward. Before you do a karate kick, your knees should be slightly bent and your hands raised in a defensive position. Then, begin to slide your rear foot forward. It should stop when it's centered under your mid section. The foot should be pointed in the direction of your target. As you slide your foot forward, begin to shift your weight backwards.
- Turn towards your attacker or target. When you do a karate kick, you need to focus on your target. Keeping your feet grounded in their current position, begin to turn your upper body.
- Begin your kick. Begin your karate kick by pulling the knee of your front leg straight up. Pull it towards your chest, using your belt as a guide.
- Extend your leg. With a fluid, smooth motion, extend your leg and kick your target. When you do a karate kick, you're kicking with the heel of your foot, not your toes.
- Return to the defensive position. Immediately after doing a karate kick, pull your leg back and return to the defensive position.
