How To Do Submissions
Learning how to do submissions is a great way to exercise, learn self-defense and increase your self-confidence. Submissions were once mostly associated with wrestling, but today they also correlate with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu because of the popularization of the mixed martial arts (MMA) shows in the United States. Experience is necessary before a person becomes proficient at submissions. It is necessary to learn and become proficient at counters to these submissions.
- In order to do submissions you must first learn the stances. There are several different stances such as the guard, reverse guard, mount, side mount and reverse mount positions. Each one is effective and has its own set of submissions you can use while in that position. You can also switch from one position to another. Learning how to do this will make you more unpredictable and skillful.
- Buy a book or take classes. A book will have diagrams and directions on how to successfully do submissions. However, it is hard for some people to learn just by reading and looking at pictures. The best way to learn how to do submissions is by taking Jiu-Jitsu classes. Instructors will show you exactly how to do them. You will be able to practice submissions on people and have them used against you. The instructor will critique and fix any problems with your submissions.
- Practice what you have learned. Learning to do submissions is one thing, but remembering them is more difficult. If you devote a little bit of time everyday to practice what you have learned, even if it is without a partner, you will be much more successful at remembering how to do submissions in the long run.
- Watch people who are proficient at doing submissions and learn from their successes and failures. If you have the opportunity to take classes, this is the best place to do this. Watch how the instructor does submissions and try to move like him and imitate what he does. Otherwise, watch the MMA fighters on television who specialize in Jiu-Jitsu submissions and learn from them.
