If you are planning a party for a group of kids, you may be wondering how to do a treasure hunt. Treasure hunts are great for birthday parties and can be the main activity for any party. Treasure hunts can be held with a variety of themes. Plus, the hidden treasures can replace boring goody bags.

In order to do a treasure hunt, you will need:

  • Treasure (candy, trinkets, toys or money)
  • Maps
  • Clues
  1. Decide how you want the treasure hunt to go. Determine if you want guests to receive little prizes along the way or just clues until they reach the treasure. Decide how long you want the hunt to last and how difficult you want the quest to be.
  2. Purchase the loot. You can fill a box will inexpensive toys or candy. You can also buy chocolate coins wrapped in gold foil for an authentic pirate party. You can use plastic eggs or real change. Use prizes that match the theme of the party.
  3. Create the map. You can create one big map for guests to follow or create individual maps for each guest or group. You can even call out the clues and have another clue waiting for whoever gets to the destination first. There can be small treasures along the way for guests to find. Make sure the clues are age appropriate. If the guests are unable to read, draw pictures for the clues.
  4. No one wants to go home empty-handed. If the hunters are children, you most likely will want everyone to be a winner. Give all guests a prize or a piece of the treasure.
