How Do You Break Up With Someone?

How do you break up with someone? Whether the relationship was long and serious or brief and casual, ending the relationship with a measure of class and a minimum of drama can be tricky. Check out our tips below to break up with someone without too much of a mess.

  1. If possible, try to meet at her house. You will need privacy to have a break up talk with someone, which makes public places less than ideal. And, by having the talk at her house instead of yours, you have an escape route handy in case the discussion gets out of hand.
  2. Figure out what you want to say in advance. There is no need to have a speech memorized in advance when you break up with someone, but you should have an idea of what ideas you want to convey. If you think about what you want to say in advance, it can help you avoid that feeling days later like you left things unsaid.
  3. Speak calmly and rationally. You are breaking up. That means, that, even if you are angry, you are through with this person. There is no need for name-calling or recriminations when you break up with someone. Just let your soon-to-be-ex know that you are done, so that you can get on to the rest of your life with a minimum of drama.
  4. Don't try to suggest that you stay in touch and stay friends. When you break up with someone, you need a little bit of time before you can hang out again and feel comfortable. So, if you say you want to be friends after you break up, at best, you are lying to your ex about your intentions. At worst, you are setting both of you up for a lot of discomfort and grief. Leave the break up conversation as the last conversation that you will have for awhile.

Remembering the tips above will make it easier to break up with someone, and get out of the experience with a minimum of trouble or drama.
