How Do You Create Underbed Storage For An Air Mattress?
The knowledge of how to create under bed storage for an air mattress can be vital. Holiday seasons, camping, and small spaces may, from time to time, call for the use of air mattresses. These mattresses are great for everything except storage. The good news is that creating storage can be done in just a few hours and with little to no previous talent.
- Wood Pallets
- Nail Gun
- Eight wood posts
- Four wood planks
- Plastic storage containers or drawer units
- Work tarp
Measure and purchase the wood pallets. The concept is simple. Three our more wood pallets, according to the size of the mattress, will serve as the top of the storage unit. The mattress will be resting on the top and using it as a platform. The same number of pallets will be used as the bottom platform of the storage unit. You will need to measure accordingly so that the pallets offer a stable frame for the mattress.
Prepare the wood planks and posts. Figure out how tall you want the storage area to be. This will primarily be based on the size of storage container or drawer units you choose. Eight wood posts and four wood planks will be needed. Four posts will serve as the corner posts. Two of the posts will be stabilizers running the width of the top and bottom of the bed. The remaining two posts will be shorter as they will run the depth of the frame on the top and bottom for added stability. The four planks will be placed as a small pocket for the air mattress so it does not slide during the night and cause injury. With that in mind two planks need to be cut for the top and bottom of the bed while the other two will need to be cut to fit the sides of the bed. Keep in mind that places like Lowe's, Home Depot, and other hardware stores may have posts and planks that are already cut to fit or they can cut them for you for little or no cost.
Lay down the work tarp and get to work. Assemble the top of the storage unit by laying the top pallets flat side down onto the tarp. Use the nail gun to connect the stabilizer beams running the width and depth of the top platform. Flip the pallets over and nail the wood planks into place so that they surround the frame and form a pocket for the mattress. Assemble the bottom platform pallets the same way minus the addition of the planks of course.
Connect the platforms. Flip the bottom platform with the flat side facing up. Use the nail gun to secure the four corner posts. Carefully place the top platform onto the assembled bottom portion of the storage unit. Secure the platform to the posts with the nail gun.
Paint and finish the storage unit. With the platforms connected forming the under bed storage unit you can go ahead and begin painting. This is optional but if you would like to use the storage unit for a regular mattress or for year round storage it is a nice touch. Let the paint dry and place the storage unit in the location of your choice. Use sandpaper to smooth out any rough edges and place the air mattress into the plank created pocket. Slide your bins into place under the top of the platform and you are finished.
