How Do You Know If You Have Food Poisoning?

How do you know if you have food poisoning? We’ll try to answer your question in this article. Most types of food poisoning are relatively easy to overcome, but a few can be very dangerous. You can be poisoned because of bacteria, viruses, or chemicals, and the exact way you are poisoned will often affect the severity of your problems.

  1. Eating History – When trying to determine if you have food poisoning, you need to think back and examine your recent eating history. If you have recently eaten any meat or fish, you have a greater chance of developing food poisoning, because these foods often rot more quickly. You should also consider whether there is anything else you may have eaten that may have been contaminated or out of date.
  2. Vomiting – If you have food poisoning, you’re probably going to be throwing up, and it will probably happen frequently. The severity of this will depend on how you were poisoned.
  3. Diarrhea – In most cases, if you have food poisoning, diarrhea will develop at some point. If vomiting isn’t present, this may happen instead, and it’s also possible to have both at once, which can be very unpleasant.
  4. Fever – If you have food poisoning caused by certain bacteria or viruses, fevers are a very common symptom.  These may be minor fevers or very severe.
  5. Chills – Often, when you have fevers from food poisoning, you may also get chills. You might even feel extremely cold and your teeth might start chattering.
  6. Headache – This is another very common symptom of fever, so it also goes hand in hand with food poisoning. Since it's such a common symptom overall, it should only be considered a sign of food poisoning if other elements are present, and the same could be said of chills.
  7. Saliva Problems – Many kinds of food poisoning can cause you to drool profusely. On the other hand, you might actually have a dry mouth instead, which could mean you have a very dangerous type of food poisoning called botulism.
  8. Brain Fog – Botulism can also cause you to have a lot of mental problems. You may not be able to remember well or think clearly. This is because botulism can attack the nervous system
  9. Vision Problems – Some people who suffer with botulism have problems with their vision. In particular, they may find that they can’t focus very well.
  10. Paralysis – Sometimes cases of botulism can lead to paralysis. If you have any of the botulism symptoms mentioned, you should get to a doctor immediately because it can be deadly. In fact, if you have food poisoning of any kind, you should probably visit a doctor. You can never know for sure if your symptoms are coming from a minor type of poisoning or not, so it is better to be safe.
