Shot accuracy can be affected by basketball goal height. Although most basketball goals are ten feet in height, lower settings can improve shot accuracy. Take the following considerations into account to learn how basketball goal height can affect shot accuracy.
- Shot accuracy is determined by angles. There is a reason why a high-arcing shot is desired in basketball. The ball needs to have an optimum angle to go into the basket. Therefore, you can have a generally better chance at the ball going in if you have a high arc, or a better angle.
- A higher arc gives the ball a softer shot as well. Of course a higher arc gives the ball a better chance to go in. Also, a higher arc improves shot accuracy by making the shot "softer." That is, a ball that is shot at a flatter angle, that has less of an arc, is more likely to bounce off the rim. A shot that has a higher arc is said to be soft as it won't bounce completely off the rim as easily. A "hard" shot will leave the rim much easier than a soft shot, which has a better chance at going in the basket.
- Lowering and raising goal height affects these angles. Imagine if a basketball goal was set to fifteen feet instead of ten. These angles would become much more difficult to shoot at, of course. At higher settings it becomes more difficult to get a good angle on the basket, to give it the best chance to enter the cylinder and to approach the rim softly.
- Shot accuracy is affected by goal height. Although most basketball goal heights are fixed, we can see how changing it can affect shot accuracy. By lowering or raising the height of the goal, it becomes less or more difficult to shoot at optimal angles.
