How To Dress Retro Style
You find the hottest trends a total bore and you hate looking like every other guy in the room, so you want to know how to dress retro style. Whether you want to rock a dapper 40’s suit, dress like an old school Ivy League prep or are into bell bottoms from the 60’s, there are places you can turn to for style inspiration.
- Watch old movies and TV shows. Cinema has been documenting fashion for about 100 years now, so if you want to know how to dress retro, turn to old school films. Download movies from the decade you want to emulate. For dapper suits, check out “Some Like it Hot,” “White Christmas,” or “Gone with the Wind.” For a retro bad ass look, check out “Rebel Without a Cause” or “Rad.” If you want a little vintage western flare, rent any movie starring John Wayne. TV shows like “I Love Lucy” and “Bonanza” can also inspire some retro fashion. And if you’re looking for a style that’s a little more recent, tune in to 80’s sitcoms like “The Cosby Show” or even “Charles in Charge.” Worn properly, Bill Cosby’s crazy sweaters could make you the talk of the town.
- Check out modern TV shows and films set in a different time period. The AMC show “Mad Men” gives great examples of 1960’s corporate wear. The Beatles-inspired film “Across The Universe” and the musical film “Hair” shows 1960’s hippie fashion at its finest. TV and film wardrobe departments do hours of painstaking research to make sure everything is realistic, and borrowing their looks will help you dress vintage like you were there.
- Look in your family photo album. Perhaps your forefathers had as much style as you do. Dust off those attic photo albums and flip through them for inspiration. See what style suits guests were wearing at your grandparent’s wedding. Make a note of what your dad was wearing on his first day of high school. Your uncle may have been rocking a sick leather jacket once upon a time. If you’re really lucky, your ancestors will have kept a few of these wardrobe gems, and you’ll be able to dress retro while giving your family members a style nod.
- Browse the racks at a vintage store. Vintage store owners are collectors of yesteryear fashion, and they’re often experts on how to wear it. Ask the store employee for fashion advice, browse the racks and look at the mannequins for style inspiration. If you want to know how to dress vintage, go to the experts.
Remember- authentic clothes from decades past are a sure way to get that retro look, but don’t be afraid to mix and match modern and vintage pieces. A vintage sport coat with a modern collared shirt will still give off an old school vibe. A leather jacket from the 80’s will still look authentic over a Hanes t-shirt. And if you find a sweater for sale that gives off a 60’s preppy vibe, go for it. Take risks, wear what you like, and don’t be afraid to wear something different.
