How To Drink Rum

Ready to move up from the world of beer and learn how to drink rum? Rum is typically served in mixed drinks, such as rum and coke, but is also delightful served neat (just in a glass). Regardless of your preference,  there are many ways to enjoy a good rum. The first trick is to pick a good rum and move on from there!

To drink rum 'neat,' you will need:

  • 2 ounces of good rum
  • A brandy snifter
  1. Decide on the type of rum you'd like to drink. A light in color rum will have a lighter flavor than a dark rum which is normally spicier. If you've never had rum before, select a light rum and purchase the best bottle your wallet allows. Life is too short to drink cheap rum.
  2. If you prefer your rum neat, select a brandy snifter and pour the rum in the glass.
  3. Swirl the glass to allow the scent of the rum to fill the brandy snifter.
  4. Sniff the brandy snifter before sipping. This will heighten your sense of taste.
  5. Take a small sip and hold it in your mouth for just a second. Roll it around with your tongue and swallow.

Rum also goes quite well as part of a mixed cocktail. To enjoy a rum and coke, you will need:

  • 2 ounces of good rum
  • 4 ounces of coke
  • 1 maraschino cherry
  • Fresh ice
  • A highball glass
  1. Fill highball glass with fresh ice.
  2. Add in the rum and top with coke.
  3. Mix lightly and garnish with the cherry.
