Knowing how to earn a save in baseball is trickier than it first sounds. There are a number of conditions that have to be met when it comes to learning how to earn a save in baseball. Before we start listing specific conditions that have to be met, we will go over what materials you will need. Afterwards we will list the criteria you must meet to earn a save in baseball.
To earn a save in baseball, you will need:
- A playing field
- A baseball team
- An opposing team
- A good pitching arm
- Win the game as the finishing pitcher. The first step in learning how to earn a save in baseball is to actually win the game. You also have to be the pitcher who threw the last pitch for your team.
- Don't be the winning pitcher. The winning pitcher is the pitcher who started the game and got your team the lead. Knowing how to earn a save in baseball means you held on to that lead, which means another pitcher on your team will be the winning pitcher when you get credited with a save.
- Don't give up the lead. The biggest part of learning how to earn a save in baseball is hanging on to a lead. If at any time you lose the lead, you will not be credited with a save.
- Pitch at least one third of an inning. To be credited with a save you must pitch at least one third of an inning. This makes it so you can't go out and throw a final pitch to try and earn a save. You have to earn it.
- Meet one of these three conditions. Out of these last three conditions, you only have to meet one of them along with everything that has been previously listed. You must either enter the game with a three-run or lower lead and pitch for at least one inning; enter the game with a tying run on base, at bat or on deck; or pitch for at least three innings. If you meet one of those three conditions, along with the other conditions listed, then congratulations! You have successfully learned how to earn a save in baseball.
