Anyone who does a lot of downloading from the internet will need to learn how to extract rar files. A rar file refers to the type of compression used on the group of files. Rar files are often used when downloading a group of files; it allows you to only download one file which has all the included files archived in the rar itself. Many things you download from the internet will be archived in rar format. Rar files are extremely easy to open, so even those with little computer knowledge will have no problems extracting rar files.

To extract a rar file, you will need:

  • A type of unzipping program.
  • A rar file
  1. Download a program capable of extracting rar files. Unfortunately, there is no way of opening rar files without a specific program. There are many different extraction programs for rar files; one of the most popular being winRAR, which can be downloaded at http://www.rarlab.com/. WinRAR is a very basic unzipping program; during installation, you can specific just exactly which type of files you want it to extract. From iso files to rar files, winRAR is a very good archival program. Installation is simple, simply open the install file you download and go through the install wizard. Make sure you check rar files to be opened with winRAR.
  2. Opening the rar file. Once winRAR is installed, extracting a rar file is as simple as clicking on the file itself. If you did the setup correctly, the file will automatically extract itself. From here, you can either run your desired file directly from the rar or move it to your hard drive.
