If you are in the market for a fast supercar, and you are looking at the Lamborghini Murcielago, you may wonder, how fast does a Lamborghini Murcielago go? In order to answer this question, the first thing that needs to be done is to visit the history of the Murcielago and determine how fast each variant can go. When introduced for the 2002 model year, the Murcielago was replacing the ever-popular Diablo model supercar from Lamborghini, so it needed to be better than the best for its success to be guaranteed.

With this car, Lamborghini continues its tradition of giving its cars names from the world of bullfighting. The Murcielago was named for a bull that survived 28 sword strokes in an 1879 fight at the Coso de los Califas bullring in Cordoba, Spain. Murcielago fought with such passion and spirit that the matador chose to spare its life, a rare honor. The bull, which came from Joaquin del Val di Navarra's farm, was later presented as a gift to Don Antonio Miura, a noted local breeder; thus began the famed Miura line of fighting bulls, which provided the name for one of Lamborghini's great automobiles.

The first version of the Murcielago was the coupe that harbored a 572 horsepower 6.2 liter V-12 engine that could propel the Murcielago to a 205 mile per hour top speed. This was the beginning of a new era for Lamborghini. With a supercar with the capability of reaching over 200 miles per hour, and with sleek, aerodynamic styling, Lamborghini designers had a winning combination to replace the popular Diablo. In 2004, Lamborghini gave buyers the opportunity to get their hair messed up at over 200 miles per hour when they introduced the Lamborghini Murcielago roadster.

The Lamborghini Murcielago was updated and enhanced with both cosmetic and performance enhancements in 2006. The LP 640 was introduced, a 631 horsepower version of the Murcielago that has since become the standard for the Murcielago nameplate. This version could reach speeds of 205 miles per hour according to Lamborghini, although testing has shown that the LP 640 is capable of exceeding that to the point of 214 miles per hour. After the introduction of the LP 640, Lamborghini introduced the Murcielago LP 640-4, an all-wheel drive variant of the Murcielago line. Capable of gut-wrenching agility, the all-wheel drive model was almost incapable of losing traction even on the sharpest of turns.

In 2007, Lamborghini introduced a variant of the Murcielago that was based on the F-22 Raptor fighter jet, called the Reventon. The Reventon is an extremely limited production vehicle, with only 20 units ever manufactured. The Reventon shared the same underpinnings as the LP 640, but with stealth aerodynamic styling. The most modern version of the Murcielago is the Lamborghini Murcielago LP 670-4 SV (Super Veloce). Capable of an official 213 mile per hour top speed, 220 unofficial, the Lamborghini LP 670-4 is the newest and last of the Murcielago line. By combining the latest in cutting-edge styling and performance, the Lamborghini Murcielago LP 670-4 puts 661 horsepower to the ground through their legendary all-wheel drive drivetrain.

No matter which version of the Lamborghini Murcielago you choose to dream about or purchase, you are assured the finest performing and handling automobile that money can buy. As the new decade ushers in a new Lamborghini supercar, we can be assured that the Murcielago will follow its predecessors, from the Countach and the Diablo, into the hearts and dreams of automotive enthusiasts for years to come.
