How To Fight For LGBT Equality
Knowing how to fight for LGBT equality can seem like an overwhelming task. LGBT stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender. This particular segment of society is considered to be going against social norms, which can cause discrimination. To help the cause, make it a point to fight for LGBT equality.
- Don’t ignore bullying. If you or someone you know is being harassed for being an LGBT individual, don’t just stand by and do nothing. Get a supportive group of friends together to help, and if you feel comfortable, report the bullying to a higher authority, such as a school official. Threats of violence or violent behavior should be reported to the authorities.
- Join organizations that promote your cause. LGBT organizations that fight for equality can be found in many communities and on college campuses. Attend meetings, make friends and get involved in their activities. One of the best ways to fight LGBT equality is to do so as a group.
- Start a group or organization. If you cannot find an LGBT organization to join, start one yourself. You can start a university club if you’re a student, or you can start a local grassroots organization in your community. Gather your LGBT friends and LGBT supporters and start organizing your new group. The cause of your group will be to fight for LGBT equality.
- Market LGBT events within your community. When a group you belong to has an event or when you know of an upcoming demonstration or meeting that’s open to the public, advertise it. Post flyers. Hang signs on community bulletin boards, and ask your friends to invite everyone they to come.
- Start groups on social networking sites. Websites like Facebook and LinkedIn allow you to create groups or pages dedicated to your cause. To fight for LGBT equality, you can post news related to the cause, strides taken in legislation and topics that are of general interest to the community. Being a part of such a group can also be a first step for an LGBT individual to feel less isolated and alone.
