When you have a capital gain or loss, you have to know how to fill out Schedule D income tax forms before you file your return for the year. Schedule D income tax can include real estate you sold, stock transactions, and many other qualified assets that you sold during the tax year. You can obtain Schedule D income tax forms from the IRS website. You may want to make more than one copy in case you enter any information incorrectly.
- When you have downloaded the Schedule D form, you will see three sections. Part I is for short-term capital gains and losses, and Part II is what you use to report long-term capital gains and losses. Part III is the summary of both short and long term gains and losses. You should already have the necessary information to complete the Schedule D if you kept a record of the sales transactions you made during the tax year.
- Fill out Part I of the Schedule D income tax form. This is the section you use to report sales of assets that you owned for less than one year. Enter a description of the property, the date you acquired it, and the date you sold it. Next, enter the sales price followed by the cost incurred for the sale, and then subtract these two figures to arrive at the net gain or loss. Do this for each qualified asset sale that you made during the tax year.
- Next, fill out Part II of the Schedule D income tax form. This is the section you use to report sales of assets that you owned for more than one year. Repeat the above process for each qualified sale that you made during the tax year.
- After you complete both Parts I and II, fill out Part III of the Schedule D. Follow the instructions in Part III, and when you have finished filling out the form, put the total amount on your 1040 line 13, and attach the Schedule D to your tax return.
