How To Film Porn

Wondering how to film porn? That's good because many people enjoy this genre and hope aspiring directors such as you will continue to provide celluloid deliverance of such movies. But if you’re one of these aspiring “intended for adults only” filmmakers, you should first realize that you're not filming a major motion picture.

Things you'll need:

  • Porn stars
  • Camera crew
  • Cameras and lighting
  1. It’s still illegal. The majority of the United States and most provinces within Canada (along with most English-speaking nations as a whole) consider the filming of pornography to entail the soliciting of prostitution and (believe it or not) will arrest any and all involved in such a project if given the opportunity. So before you compile your shooting schedule, it’s important to carefully pick and choose the locales for such a production in order to avoid such annoyances.
  2. You’re not shooting “Titanic.” The belief that filming porn is akin to making a major motion picture is purely delusional. Pornographic films as compared to generally released commercial cinema in their production are as different as basketball and ice hockey. This should be understood going in.
  3. A typical screenplay is not required in filming porn, nor is a conventional cinematographer on site. Instead, all that is needed where these elements (required in the higher cinematic arts) are concerned is a basic outline of who does what to whom (as opposed to a conventional script) and whatever camera equipment the film’s producer can lay their hands on (along with anyone who can keep things in focus while they employ it).
  4. Money talks. If you need to go to RadioShack, a local high school’s AV center (or whatever) to get what you need while filming porn, it’s cool. D.W. Griffith has been dead a long time and won’t be critiquing your work (production cost should be the driving force as you complete the project).
  5. What about editing and completing the project? The use of software already installed on most of today’s home computers will suit what is needed in compiling what will pass as a final cut where acceptable pornography is concerned. Just use your own or a friend’s to keep your overhead low.

But (to repeat previous observations) you should never mistake such pursuits as serious filmmaking. Instead, you should understand that when you film porn you’re instead compiling entertainment that few will view within the realm of actual art.
