How To Find Jobs In Australia
Learning how to find a job in Australia is a lot like looking for work in the states in that it involves planning ahead, budgeting and networking. The process is, however, a bit more challenging and can often be daunting. But with the right amount of confidence and motivation, working overseas may be easier than you think. Check out our list of tips to help you land a gig “Down Under.”
- Stick with what you know. If you’re looking to hone in on your skill set or gain more experience in your field, you’ll want to get a serious head start on the job hunt before arriving to Australia. Scouring the job scene 6-months or more in advance will work to your advantage and may even allow you to be a little more selective in your search.
- Branch out. Wait, didn’t we just tell you to stay within your field? Yes, and no. It all really depends on your purpose for wanting to work in Australia. If your main goal is merely to experience overseas living and culture, then you may want to consider a temporary career change. Picking up a lowbrow job (like working as a tour guide, for example) that offers less pay, but a more flexible schedule, will allow you extra time to get out and explore.
- Create a budget. Jobs can be paid or unpaid. If you’ve got a massive savings account built up for your travels, then you’ll be lucky to find plenty of unpaid options by way of internships and service programs. However, if you’re like the rest of us and need a consistent income, you’ll have to be a little more open-minded.
- Look for jobs with extras. By extras we mean things that will help ease your living expenses, such as room and board. Not all jobs offer these ideal perks, but if you’re willing to take on some extra grunt work, you’re in luck. Jobs in Australia that provide room and board often involve farm work, bartending/serving and diving. When taking on a job that involves strenuous physical activity, it’s important to learn about any possible dangers that the position may pose.
