Whether you're ready to start school, just finishing school, or changing your career path, knowing how to find the perfect job can serve you well. Finding the perfect job is really about finding the perfect job for you, so you'll need to consider your abilities and allow yourself to consider all the possibilities. Ultimately, you'll match your skills to your desires to get started on the path to your perfect job.

  1. Explore your skills and preferences. Knowing yourself will help you find the perfect job. Consider what you are good at and what you enjoy doing. To help you think this through, discuss your marketable skills with people who know you well and believe in you, or seek other tools to help you make this assessment. For example, colleges often have career assessment tools to help you evaluate your skills and personality and identify the fields that could be a good fit for you.
  2. Dream big. Keeping your skills and preferences in mind, ask yourself what your dream job is. Brainstorm several ideas. Really letting yourself consider the possibilities will help you find the perfect job. When you've identified some dream jobs, consider what is it about these types of jobs that appeal to you.
  3. Bring your dreams back down to earth. Is your dream job really perfect for you or does it just sound glamorous, exciting, or prestigious? Think about the qualities of the job that really appeal to you and explore jobs that have these qualities. Is what you think a job entails really what it entails? Is it within your grasp? How fully does it match your skill set and preferences? How can you begin to get on this career path?
  4. Do your research. As you research to find your perfect job, consider such practical matters as starting pay, the availability of the positions you are targeting, related training and jobs, and the potential for upward mobility. How will each job possibility suit your lifestyle? How long might it take for you to get the desired position? How likely are you to be satisfied with the job long term? Are you motivated to do what it takes to get the perfect job? Doing some field research or informational interviews will help you determine if a job is truly perfect for you and help you make contacts in the field.
  5. Continue to discover the job prospects and possibilities that will lead you to your perfect job. Once you've considered your skills and research the position and field of your perfect job, find job openings by using personal contacts and affiliations, job placement agencies, checking job listings, and so on.
  6. Consider your level of commitment as you set your sights on the perfect job. How far are you willing to go to strengthen your skills or develop new skills? Once you've discovered your perfect job, make a genuine effort to take the steps that will get you there.

Evaluate, then match, your skill set to a job. Consider all of the possibilities and discover the qualities of your dream job. Do your research, then make your move. Find the perfect job and make it yours.
