By keeping some basic guidelines in mind, you can learn how to find the right tennis racquet for you. No matter if you are an experienced or beginning player, using the right racquet is essential to achieve optimal results.

  1. Determine your skill level. Beginning players should choose a racquet that is relatively light, while more advanced players should use a heavier racquet. Your skill level is key to finding the right tennis racquet.
  2. Evaluate your grip size. This is important in providing comfort when hitting the tennis ball, and can be determined by a tennis professional or tennis gear salesperson.
  3. Determine what size racquet head will be best for you. Tennis racquet heads come in mid-size, mid-plus and oversize. A larger racquet head will provide a larger "sweet spot," allowing for greater ease in hitting the tennis ball.
  4. Decide how long your racquet should be. Most racquets are 27 inches in length, though you can find longer ones. These tennis racquets are typically only chosen by expert players who need increased power during serves. Experiment to find the right racquet length for you.
  5. Consider how heavy any potential racquets are. Racquets range in weight from between eight and 12.5 pounds—though the weight is not evenly distributed, and can vary depending on how the racquet is laced.
  6. Evaluate what material the racquet is made from. You can find racquets made from a variety of materials, including aluminum, titanium, Kevlar and even wood—though the best tennis racquets are made from graphite.
  7. Consider your budget. Beginning players can typically find a racquet that is affordable while still meeting their needs. More experienced players may need to purchase more expensive racquets.
