How To Find Tennis Racquet Grip Size

If you are a tennis player, knowing how to find your tennis racquet grip size is very important. Even the slightest error in racquet size could do major damage to the hand, wrist and elbow.

To measure your grip size, you will need:

  • A measuring tape or ruler
  • Your dominant hand

Steps

  1. Tennis racquets come in a variety of sizes ranging from 4” to 4 7/8". There is a very simple way for you to measure the size of your grip yourself. While holding your dominant hand out flat, palm side up, with the fingers together, find the three main creases in your palm. Measure up from the middle crease, along the line between your middle and ring finger to the tip of the ring finger. This measurement will be your grip size. It usually falls between 4 1/8” – 4 3/8” for woman and 4 3/8” – 4 5/8” for men.
  2. If your measurement falls between the 1/8” marks, it is better to go with the smaller racquet. It is much easier to fatten the grip with an over wrap than to take it to a pro shop and have them try to shave it down. On the other hand, if you are buying the racquet for a junior player, it is better to go with the larger size. If they are still growing, they will grow into it.
  3. Having the right sized tennis racquet grip is important for more reasons than just improving your game. The right sized grip will save you from possible injuries to your elbow, wrist and your hand, any of which could end your tennis career. Take the time to measure your grip size now, and save yourself the time it would take to rehab an injury later.
