Through the ages and around the world, the beret has largely been used as a military hat, and they certainly knew how to fit a beret. Eventually, it became an iconic fashion statement. Allover the world, the beret has been used by various military organizations. It was not until World War II that the United States used it as part of their uniform, and it is still used by the special elite forces of the United States Army.
There are strict procedures in not just how to wear a military beret but as well as how to take care of it. When wearing a military beret, the edge of the beret has to be one inch above the eyebrows and aligned across the forehead. A stiffener is added above the left eye and the extra material is pulled between the top and middle of the right ear. Hair is restricted from extending below the front of the beret. Female soldiers must put their hair into a bun; it cannot be bunched into the beret. All enlisted soldiers wear their insignia on their berets as well. When a soldier is not wearing their beret, it must be carried. It is prohibited from strapping the beret to a belt or shoving it into a coat pocket.
The word “beret” means “cap” in French; it was introduced to the culture by the Basque regions of France, where berets were made out of wool so they could be worn in the winter. By the the 20th century, the French turned the beret into the signature head gear for Bohemian artists. The beret eventually made it across the pond to America in the 1930s. As to how the general public wears the beret, it varies from person to person. However, there are a three guidelines on how to correctly wear a beret: Do not bunch your hair into the beret. Do not pull the beret over you head. And try to give your beret a natural “slouch” and wear it loose.
