How To Fit Blinds
Learning how to fit blinds is the first step to having a window treatment that adds dimension, privacy and color to any room. To fit blinds and have them operate properly, they must be the correct size for the window. Taking the time to follow these instructions will save you a lot of hassle and frustration when installing your blinds.
To measure and fit blinds properly, you will need:
- A tape measure
- Paper
- A pencil
- Check the window casing for depth and obstructions. Look at the inside of the window casing to see if it appears deep enough for the window blind hardware. A two-inch depth is usually recommended. Look to see if there are window cranks or any other items within the window that would obstruct the functioning of the blinds.
- Measure the inside width of the window casing. It is best to take measurements in three places. Write down the measurements for the inside of the window casing from the top, middle and lower part of the window. Place a tape measure inside the window casing on the left and measure to the inside of the window casing on the right.
- Measure the inside height of the window casing. Again, taking measurements in three places. Write down the left, middle and right side measurements. Place a tape measure inside the window casing on the top and measure to the inside of the bottom.
- Order the blinds. With these measurements, you will be able to order your window blinds. Most manufacturers will automatically deduct half an inch from the measurements you give them to assure a proper fit.
If you are adding blinds to more than one window, measure each window separately. Even though the windows may look the same, they may not have the exact same measurements.
