This article will show you how to fix a scratched CD. One scratch on a CD can cause problems sometimes, but other times it will still play. If your scratched CD has a lot of scratches then it probably won’t play until you fix it.  The tips below should help you fix your scratched CD.

  1. To start to fix the scratched CD the very first thing to do is to be sure it is the scratch that is causing the problem. Clean the disk very well.  Use a little bit of warm water. You can add a small amount of detergent if you like. Rub the CD with your fingers gently with the warm soapy water.  After that run the CD under the warm water and wipe gently with your fingers until any visible signs of soap are removed. When finished take a very soft cloth, such as an eye glass cleaner cloth, and very gently wipe the cd clean. Let’s try it again. If it still doesn’t play and you can see visible scratches move on to the next step.
  2. This may sound strange but it really does work. Put a small dap of toothpaste on your finger and rub it over the scratch very gently. The toothpaste has to be a paste and not a gel. Clean in straight lines,  starting from the inside and wiping straight to the edge. Turn slightly and repeat, until you have made a complete circle. Remember to do this very slowly and gently. Concentrate on the area that has the scratches. When finished rinse with warm water. When it is well rinsed dry with a soft cloth as you did in the previous step.
  3. Does the CD work now? If it doesn’t you can try to purchase a cleaning kit if you that will fix it. If the CD is still scratched then you may be out of luck but it is worth trying.

Hopefully you know how to fix a scratched CD and now have a CD that is working properly. In the future it is a good idea to keep backups of the CDs that you own.
