How To Flush A Power Steering System
If your power steering fluid is old, then you probably want to know how to flush your power steering system. Power steering fluid lubricates the steering system of your car and allows it to run smoothly. When the power steering fluid gets old, your steering system may whine or squeal. It is a good idea to flush the power steering system before damage is done to the system.
Things You Will Need:
- Container for old fluid
- Siphon bulb
- Two quarts of power steering fluid
- Power steering conditioner
- Quart of power steering flush
- Shop rags
- Work gloves
- Drive to the auto parts store and buy the things you will need to flush the power steering system in your car. Make sure you have a container (with a lid) big enough to hold the old power steering fluid. Drive home and park in your driveway. Shut off the engine of your car and let the car cool down.
- Open the hood of your car and secure it with the safety arm. Put on your work gloves to protect your hands. Take the cap off the power steering reservoir. Take the siphon bulb and siphon the old power steering fluid out of your car. Put the old power steering fluid in a container. Continue to do this until you have removed all of the old power steering fluid from your car.
- Pour the power steering flush into your power steering reservoir. Wait for a minute. Allow the power steering flush to clean out the power steering system of your car. Take the siphon bulb and siphon the old power steering flush out of your car. Put the old power steering flush in a container. Continue to do this until you have removed all of the old power steering flush from your car.
- Replace the power steering flush with new power steering fluid. Pour the first quart of power steering fluid into your car. Fill the power steering reservoir with the new power steering fluid. Leave enough room to add some power steering conditioner to your power steering system. When the power steering is full, replace the cap on the power steering reservoir.
- Put the cap on the container holding the old power steering fluid and power steering flush. Dispose of old fluids properly. Put the hood down on your car and take your car for a test drive your car. The power steering system on your car should work beautifully.
