So you want to learn how to get a brighter sound on a Classical guitar. No matter what brand of classical guitar you are playing there are a few pieces of the puzzle that we'll need to examine. These are the important considerations towards a brighter sound: strings, nails, position, and finger strength.
- Strings. Test out different strings from different companies. Strings that are old and worn out will tend to sound dull. They do not like staying in tune and may be too worn for that bright sound you are looking for. You should also try different types of nylon strings. When you go to the store and buy strings, you will notice hard tension strings, normal tension strings and even extra hard tension strings.
- Different tensions may create different sounds for your guitar. Many guitar students will even use different sets of strings together. One example is using the Savarez bass strings with the D'addario treble strings. Many believe the D'addario trebles sounded better than the Savarez trebles, while the D'addario bass strings wore out more quickly than Savarez bass strings. Experiment with different types of strings on your guitar and find what you like best.
- Nails. Shape your nails smoothly and frequently. Classical players use their finger nails when playing the guitar. If you are playing on your own, perhaps you should take a lesson or two in order to learn about nail shape. It takes time to perfect the shape of your nail for playing.
- Advice from others Short on cash? Find the local Classical Guitar Society. The Denver Classical Guitar Society, for example, is full of players of all different levels that would be happy to talk to newcomers about their craft and personal styles. It is also a great locale to find a quality instrument at a good price.
