If you are suffering from symptoms of a genital infection or a sexually transmitted disease, you will need to learn how to get help for sexual health problems. If left untreated, the infections will worsen, and may even lead to infertility.  Thus, it is extremely important to be treated by healthcare professionals as soon as possible.

  1. Identity the symptoms. Sometimes your genital may just be suffering from mild irritation caused by allergies or friction from sexual intercourse.  However, the following symptoms signify that you may have STDs and must get help for sexual health problems: yellow/green discharge, burning sensation during urination, and pain during sex.  For women, their vaginas may give out a strong odor if they are infected with certain STDs.
  2. Getting tested. You should get tested for STDs periodically, particularly when you just have unprotected sex with a new partner.  The test will include taking blood samples and samples from the genital.  Since some women do not have any symptoms for chlamydia, they will need to be tested to identify the infection. STD testing can be done by a physician, an ob/gyn, or at a local Planned Parenthood for a cheap or even free screening.  Getting tested is the first step for you to get help for sexual health problems.
  3. Talk to health professionals. Do not try to treat any sexual health problems on your own as it may lead to complications, such as infertility and chronic pelvic pain.  Search online for local STD clinics for a consultation.  If you are in college, speak to the nurse practitioners and ob/gyns at the health center.
The consultation fee should already be included in the fee you pay at the beginning of the school year.

Tips:

  • Do not be shy to get help for sexual health problems.  Although this may be embarrassing, especially if you have never done that before, seeking help from professionals is necessary to ensure that your health is not in jeopardy.
  • A vaginal yeast infection can be treated on your own if you have experience with this problem and have consulted a health professional before.  There are medication and suppositories available in drugstores without a prescription.  In this case, to get help for sexual health problems will mean making a trip to Rite Aid or CVS.
  • If you are diagnosed with a STD, contact your current and previous partners so they can also get help for sexual health problems. Refrain from having sexual intercourse until your infection is cured.
