Need to know how to get a hunting license in Virginia? If you are looking to hunt in Virginia and need a hunting license, follow these easy steps.

  1. A standard hunting license costs $18 for a Virginia resident. You must have been a resident for six months prior to purchasing a license. This includes students attending college and military personnel stationed in Virginia. A license costs $86 for a non-resident.
  2. Licenses can be purchased online through the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. They can be reached by telephone at (866) 721-6911. Various licensing agents may also sell licenses, which include many sporting goods stores.
  3. Hunting for bear, deer and turkey requires an additional license, which may be purchased for $18. Some types of weapons also require additional licenses. These include the archery license ($31), crossbow license ($31) and muzzle-loading license ($31).
  4. Some types of hunting may require additional permits. For example, permits are required to hunt in Virginia's national or state forests.
  5. In addition to the standard hunting license, there are several other types of hunting licenses for residents. These include the sportsman's license ($120), which includes the hunting license, bear, deer and turkey license, archery license, crossbow license, muzzle-loading license, freshwater fishing license and trout license; the county or city hunting license ($11), good for city or county of residence only; the apprentice license ($11), for a first-time hunter being mentored by an experienced hunter; the senior citizen license ($7.50); and the junior license ($8.50) for those ages twelve to fifteen.
  6. Lifetime hunting licenses are also available for purchase, ranging from $15 to $255 depending on the purchaser's age. Typically, standard licenses are valid for one year from date of purchase.
